The Well Dressed Desk

What exactly does the well-dressed desk wear? We have to begin with a desk blotter. They are available in two standard sizes. The executive desk will generally use the larger size of 20"x34" while the home office will generally use the smaller size of 18"x27". Standard blotter paper is also available in these sizes. Blotters, today, do not really need the blotting paper. However, the paper will give a fresh look to the desk at anytime. Besides the standard blotter paper, which now comes in an array of colors, you can use wallpaper or even good quality wrapping paper. Desk blotters are available in glass, Lucite, many different woods, or leather. The leather can be textured or smooth and comes in a huge variety of colors and grains to match any decor.

Along with the blotter, you will need some kind of pen stand. They are available with one or two penholders and some have a clock or business card case attached. There are also pencil wells or containers, which will hold pens. An organizer for loose paper or a memo box is a natural on a desk. There are also post-it note holders to jot messages or memos to yourself. Desk organizers are available that will do double duty by holding pens and paper along with paper clips and rubber bands. Desk organizers are available in the same variety of woods and leathers.

Usually a desk tray or correspondence tray is a good idea if you send out a lot of mail. Some of them have covers to hide everything away from prying eyes. A letter rack can organize your unopened letters and other incoming mail. Letter openers are another very handy item. These are available in many colors to mix or match with your desk blotter. Some letter openers come in a set with scissors or magnifiers.

Bookends make a great addition on a large desk. They are available in different metals as well as marble or crystal. They just need to be heavy enough to hold the books you need upright without toppling. They are also available customized for different professions. They have the scales of justice for lawyers, the medical caduceus for doctors, and the bull and bear for stockbrokers.

Business card cases and nameplates are often necessary on a desk. Accessible cardholders make it very convenient to hand your card to a client or friend. Many of these cardholders are part of a larger nameplate or have pens or clocks so they are also dual purpose. Nameplates identify you and your desk as "yours." They are also available in many metals, leathers, crystal and marble. A beautiful desk clock adds the finishing touch to your desk. Some are small and heavy and double as paperweights. Some have moving objects or show time around the world. Many are engravable and look very professional when personalized.

Paperweights add personality to your desk. There are also "desk stress relievers" such as executive slinky or games. These are the whimsical additions to a desk, but you need to be careful not to create too much clutter.

Whether you dress your desk with a complete matched desk set, or buy the pieces for their practicality, it should complement you and your individual personality. A neat office with a fine looking desk makes the right impression.
